Although I understand that diagnosis can’t be made in a few weeks, I think there is a time when they have to give you one. For how long have you seen your doctor? I have seen a psychiatrist for 5 years who couldn’t really diagnose me. I should have stopped seeing him long ago, but I decided I wanted to see another one. Of course, if you’re a teenager, I can understand that he’s hesitant with the diagnosis, because it seems that you’re not “supposed” to diagnose a teenager with BPD (although I think that it should be possible in some situations). Now that you know the symptoms of BPD, maybe you should tell him that you think that you relate to these symptoms. It’s not easy to suggest something to your doctor, but I think it’s important if you think there is a possibility that it’s this disorder. You can mention that you came across a community of people with BPD and that you related strongly to what they feel (and the symptoms). If you don’t feel comfortable with your doctor, I suggest you find another one. Sometimes it’s the best thing to do.
(Also, you said doctor, but I supposed you meant psychiatrist. If your doctor isn’t a specialist, it’s normal that he can’t diagnose you with personality disorders. They mostly know about mood disorders.)
Also, do you see a therapist? I think you should consider it. They could give you tips and advice instead of just pills. Not that it’s wrong to give pills, but it’s important to have a therapy, especially with BPD, and especially if you have co-morbidity along with it, especially if your condition was so severe you had to be in a mental institution.

Julie
I had to see two different doctors to get diagnosed with BPD and even then it was really only because my mom had BPD (so I grew up in an environment of BPD behaviour.) It’s hard to diagnose because it’s a personality disorder, and emotion deregulation… so it’s something that they have to see in you for themselves I think as well. (It took me about half a year to get that diagnosed and my mom took basically 30 years… but she was in a time when that wasn’t there at all..)
I really hope you can get someone to listen. Maybe get a second opinion. Like Julie said, I think you should be seeing a therapist. I see a social worker that specializes in BPD and a psychiatrist who looks over my medication. It’s hard at first to open up to people, but it really helps. I know my life is a lot less stressful just from having one person I can tell anything to.
I hope you get better.
Best Regards,
Chelsea.
